Cyst and Lipomas
Cysts and lipomas are extremely common occurrences on the body and face, but are the cause of self-consciousness, embarrassment or even discomfort for many men and women of all ages. These can, however, be removed quickly and simply on an outpatient basis.
A cyst is a walled sac under the skin often containing trapped skin cells. Once formed, a cyst can either spontaneously resolve or require medical treatment. Common cyst types include epidermal, pilar, and acne cysts.
A lipoma is a benign tumor of fat cells usually found just underneath the skin. Lipomas usually occur on the back, chest and sometimes on the arms and legs. Although benign in nature, they can sometimes be painful.
The exact cause of a lipoma is not clearly understood. However, there is a strong genetic tendency.
A local anaesthetic is normally used when removing cysts and lipomas. The majority of moles and cysts are removed by simple excision, and where only one or two exist, the procedure would normally take no more than twenty minutes.
